Nationality
Spanish nationality by marriage: requirements and full process
If you are married to a Spanish citizen, you may apply for nationality after only one year. We explain the updated process.
Specific requirements
To benefit from the reduced period, you must be legally married to a Spanish citizen, have lived legally in Spain for at least one year, have the marriage registered and not be legally or effectively separated.
As with any nationality file, you must also prove good civic conduct and have no relevant criminal record.
Required documentation
The usual file includes the marriage certificate registered in the Spanish Civil Registry, a valid passport, criminal record certificates, historic registration certificates and, when applicable, the family book and DELE or CCSE certificates.
If the marriage was celebrated abroad, the key point is that it must be properly registered in Spain before the application starts.
Process and common questions
The application may be submitted online or before the competent registry office. After a favorable decision, you must take the oath or promise and complete the final registration.
One of the most common questions concerns dual nationality. Whether it is possible depends on the applicable rules and on the applicant's country of origin.
Document check before applying for nationality
In Spanish nationality files, the most common errors involve expired certificates, criminal-record documents without legalization, name discrepancies, gaps in residence continuity or poorly documented integration evidence.
Before filing, it is worth reviewing residence-card history, departures from Spain, local registration, civil certificates and criminal-record status. A prior review helps avoid a file being delayed for months by a foreseeable correction.
Case monitoring and incident response
Filing is not the end of the work. Notifications, status changes, requests and possible delays must be monitored. If the Administration asks for additional information, the response should follow the same document logic as the initial application.
When the decision is favorable, practical steps remain: oath or promise, civil-registry registration where applicable and obtaining the Spanish DNI and passport. Planning this stage helps avoid missed appointments and unnecessary delays.
How to prepare your consultation with Hispamar
To make the consultation more useful, gather your passport or ID, residence card if you have one, previous decisions, notices, recent certificates and a clear list of relevant dates: entry into Spain, local registration, card expiry, appointments and trips.
With that information we can assess the strongest route, detect risks and organize the next steps before the file reaches the Administration.
