Nationality
Spanish nationality by residence: how many years you need depending on your origin
How many years of residence do you need to apply for Spanish nationality? It depends on your country of origin. Complete 2025 guide with all deadlines.
Residence periods depending on your origin
The general period for applying for nationality by residence is ten years of legal and continuous residence. However, nationals of Ibero-American countries, Andorra, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea and Portugal may apply after two years.
There are also reduced periods of five years for recognized refugees and one year in specific situations, such as people born in Spain or married to a Spanish citizen.
What counts as legal and continuous residence
Residence must be maintained with a valid authorization during the whole required period. Long absences can break continuity and periods of irregular stay do not count for the application.
For that reason it is advisable to review expiration dates, renewals and departures from Spain in advance to confirm whether the exact period has already been met.
Documents and filing
Usual documents include the passport, apostilled and translated birth certificate, criminal record certificate, historic registration record, proof of legal residence and DELE and CCSE certificates where applicable.
The application may be filed online or before the competent registry office, and the decision often takes between twelve and twenty-four months depending on the administrative workload.
Document check before applying for nationality
In Spanish nationality files, the most common errors involve expired certificates, criminal-record documents without legalization, name discrepancies, gaps in residence continuity or poorly documented integration evidence.
Before filing, it is worth reviewing residence-card history, departures from Spain, local registration, civil certificates and criminal-record status. A prior review helps avoid a file being delayed for months by a foreseeable correction.
Case monitoring and incident response
Filing is not the end of the work. Notifications, status changes, requests and possible delays must be monitored. If the Administration asks for additional information, the response should follow the same document logic as the initial application.
When the decision is favorable, practical steps remain: oath or promise, civil-registry registration where applicable and obtaining the Spanish DNI and passport. Planning this stage helps avoid missed appointments and unnecessary delays.
