What social rooting is and how to apply

Social rooting is a temporary residence authorization for exceptional circumstances for foreign nationals who are in Spain and can prove a minimum continuous stay, together with family ties or social integration.

Under the Regulation approved by Royal Decree 1155/2024, the practical stay reference for social rooting is at least two years before the application, with absence limits that must be checked case by case.

The usual review includes full passport, local registration and other proof of stay, criminal-record certificate, fee payment, family ties with legal residents or a favorable social integration report.

Sufficient means of support must also be proven. If foreign documents are submitted, apostille or legalization and sworn translation must be checked where applicable.

The application is filed with the competent Immigration Office, in person or electronically where possible. A well-ordered file must clearly explain how each requirement is met.

After approval, the applicant must complete the later steps, such as registration or conditions linked to the authorization and requesting the foreigner identity card within the relevant deadline.

Before starting any immigration file, it is worth confirming three points: that the chosen route really matches your situation, that foreign documents are legalized or apostilled where required, and that no certificates expire before filing.

It is also important to check whether the procedure must be filed from Spain, from a consulate or online. The wrong channel can cost weeks even when the substance of the case is viable.

After filing, keep the registration receipt, proof of fee payment, electronic notices and any appointment receipts. These documents help prove deadlines, answer requests for information and prepare the fingerprinting or card stage if approval arrives.

If a request for additional information arrives, it is not advisable to answer with loose documents. The right approach is to analyze exactly what the Administration is asking for and respond within the deadline with a clear and coherent file.

To make the consultation more useful, gather your passport or ID, residence card if you have one, previous decisions, notices, recent certificates and a clear list of relevant dates: entry into Spain, local registration, card expiry, appointments and trips.
