Requirements to apply for Spanish nationality
A summary of the key requirements for nationality by residence: legal period, continuous residence, good civic conduct, integration and documents.
1. Legal, continuous and immediately prior residence
Spanish nationality by residence requires that you have lived in Spain for the period applicable to your case in a legal, continuous and immediately prior way before the application.
The general period is different from the reduced period that applies in certain cases, such as nationals of Ibero-American countries, people married to a Spanish citizen, people born in Spain and other legally recognized situations. Before filing, the deadline should be calculated precisely.
2. Good civic conduct and integration
In addition to residence time, the Administration assesses good civic conduct and sufficient integration into Spanish society. That is why it is important to review criminal records, administrative incidents and document consistency.
Many files also require certificates proving that the CCSE test and, where applicable, the DELE exam have been passed. There are exemptions and special situations, but they must be documented correctly.
3. Common documents in the file
Common documents include the passport, residence card, birth certificate, criminal-record certificate from the country of origin, local registration certificate, proof of integration and fee payment.
Foreign certificates must be valid, legalized or apostilled where necessary and translated by a sworn translator if they are not in Spanish or an accepted co-official language.
Document check before applying for nationality
In Spanish nationality files, the most common errors involve expired certificates, criminal-record documents without legalization, name discrepancies, gaps in residence continuity or poorly documented integration evidence.
Before filing, it is worth reviewing residence-card history, departures from Spain, local registration, civil certificates and criminal-record status. A prior review helps avoid a file being delayed for months by a foreseeable correction.
Case monitoring and incident response
Filing is not the end of the work. Notifications, status changes, requests and possible delays must be monitored. If the Administration asks for additional information, the response should follow the same document logic as the initial application.
When the decision is favorable, practical steps remain: oath or promise, civil-registry registration where applicable and obtaining the Spanish DNI and passport. Planning this stage helps avoid missed appointments and unnecessary delays.
