International protection

International protection covers people who need refuge in Spain because of persecution, serious conflict or a real risk of serious harm.

Overview

The Spanish Asylum Office distinguishes between refugee status and subsidiary protection. The core of the case is to explain precisely why returning to the country of origin would create a real risk.

Official guidance also stresses the right to an interpreter and legal assistance, and that the personal interview is a decisive part of the process.

Requirements

  • Existence of individual persecution, serious conflict or a real risk of serious harm upon return.
  • A coherent and sufficiently detailed personal account.
  • Identification and available documents, although the case can begin even when some missing documents must be explained.

Common documents

  • Passport or identity document available, if any.
  • Chronological statement of facts, complaints, decisions, threats, reports or any relevant proof of risk.
  • Family, medical or social documentation that helps explain vulnerability or the specific situation.
